Belgian’s Rough Diamond Exports Approach 50 Million Carats in 2016

In the January to May 2016 five month period, over US$5.2 billion worth of polished diamonds were imported to Belgium, while polished diamond exports from the country were worth US$5.5 billion, according to the most recent figures from the Antwerp World Diamond Centre. Polished diamond imports to Belgium decreased by 11.4% in terms of carats and by 8.8% in monetary terms from such exports in the first five months of 2015.

Rough diamond exports from Belgium between January and May 2016 approached 50 million carats worth some US$5.74 billion. This represented an increase of just over a fifth in terms of carats and a 9.3% increase in monetary terms from the first five months of 2015. The country’s rough diamond imports during this period quarter increased by 10.76% in terms of carats, while recording a 5.21% increase in monetary terms from one year earlier.

Belgium’s polished diamond exports to Israel in the first five months of 2016 reached 173,690.46 carats worth nearly US$583 million, marking a decrease of 7.67% in terms of carats from January to May 2015 period and stability in monetary terms.

Belgium’s polished diamond imports from Israel reached 167,148.73 carats worth US$531,209,005 in the January to May 2016 period. This represented a more than 9% decrease in terms of carats and an 11.44% decrease in monetary terms from the first five months of 2015.
