Anglo American has issued its performance report for the third quarter (ended September 30), showing that De Beers’ sale of rough diamonds was up by 77% to 5.3 million carats year-on-year, Gem Konnect reports. According to De Beers, the increase “reflected improved trading conditions”. Overall rough diamond production in Q3 increased by 4% to 6.3 million carats.

At De Beers’ joint venture Debswana in Botswana, production increased by 12% to 4.5 million carats. Production at Jwaneng increasing by 47%, and production at Orapa decreased by 22%. Production at DBCM (South Africa) increased by 6 % to 1.1 million carats. Production at Namdeb Holdings in Namibia decreased by 13% to 0.4 million carats.

Production in Canada decreased by 48% to 0.2 million carats due to Snap Lake being placed on care and maintenance in December 2015. This was partially offset by first production at Gahcho Kue, which was officially opened on September 20.
