US Polished Diamond Imports Flat, Price Per Carat Rises in January 2017

Government data quoted by Rough & Polished shows that US polished diamond imports remained flat at $1.77 billion in January. By volume, polished imports fell 8% to 840,669 carats year-on-year. Price per carat rose 8% to $2,099 year-on-year.

Polished diamond exports fell 1% to $1.25 billion, which means that net polished imports rose 1% to $517 million. Rough diamond imports grew “almost fourfold to $120 million from $31 million a year earlier” and “rough exports more than tripled to $56 million”, according to the report. Net rough imports rose to $64 million from $13 million a year before.

The US net diamond account for January, “representing total imports minus total exports”, rose 11% to $582 million.
