New York is the state with the best quality diamonds, finds the America’s Diamond and Jewelry Ranking Report, which was developed based on a statistical culmination of a survey of WP Diamonds’ 15,000 latest customer inquiries at their international headquarters. Florida and California ranked 2nd and 3rd in the list of states with the best quality diamonds.

Maryland topped the list of states that have the largest diamonds with an average of 1.75 carats. It was followed by Michigan at 1.69 carats, Illinois at 1.59 carats and Alaska at 1.49 carats, according to the research. California led the stakes for the most expensive second hand jewelry, followed by Florida and North Dakota.

The research also examined which diamond shapes were most popular for each state. The oval cut, which is most popular in Texas and Minnesota, has risen from being the 8th most popular diamond shape to the sixth, reports WP Diamonds. Heart shaped diamonds, while accounting for less than 1 percent of the most popular diamond shapes, also increased in popularity.

“To date, there hasn’t been a proper study of America’s diamond and jewelry consumption and how it varies by state. It is fascinating to compare and contrast our neighbors and get a detailed look of what kinds of diamonds and jewelry they own. Whether you are a jewelry enthusiast, or in the market for an engagement ring, the trends that dominate one part of the country often don’t translate to other regions,” says Benjamin Burne, CEO of WP Diamonds.

“The report also provides an insight into how much disposable income is spent on diamonds and jewelry and in which states people gift most generously. The results surprised us, as they will you,” concludes Michael Lebowitz, Director of Jewelry at WP Diamonds.
