NEW £1 COIN ENTERS CIRCULATION, FEATURES A HIDDEN SECURITY FEATURE

The new £1 coin was introduced into circulation on March 28, 2017. According to Jewllery Focus, resting on information provided by Royal Mint, the new coin is twelve-sided and features an “anti-counterfeiting technology in the form of milled edges”. It also has features including holograms and multiple, layered metal.

Additionally, from 6 October 2017 onward, the old £1 coin will no longer need to be accepted. Most banks and the Post Office will still accept the round £1 coin to be deposited. Many coin-based machines are yet to be upgraded, with Tesco currently overhauling their trolleys to accept both coins. Moreover, any old £1 coins should be taken to the bank before 15 October.

And last but not least, in addition to holograms and other features, the new £1 coin also has a special high security protective trait to prevent future counterfeiting.
