ANGOLA’S ENDIAMA PRODUCES 9.21 MILLION CARATS OF DIAMONDS IN 2016

Angola’s state-owned national diamond company, Endiama, has announced diamond production results for 2016. According to IDEX Online, the miner produced 9.21 million carats of diamonds in 2016, surpassing the target of 9 million carats set by the Ministry of Planning and Territorial Development.

Endiama Chairman Antonio Carlos Sumbula said that the company “is carrying out aerial work aimed at discovering more diamond reserves”. In 2017, the company seeks to produce fewer diamonds in order to stimulate an increase in diamond prices.

Earlier this month, it was reported that diamond exports from Angola, as well as diamond revenues, declined sharply in 2016. Diamond exports were down 8.45% during 2016, generating revenue of $1.082 million compared to $1.182 million earned a year earlier. Carat production totaled 7.2 million carats, compared to 8.394 million carats a year earlier.

The Catoca Mining Society produced nearly 75% of the rough produced in the country, while artisanal production fell by nearly 60%. However, mining officials are optimistic, stating that the sector continues to show “strong sustainable performance, offering a good outlook for substantial recovery in the coming years”.
