RIO TINTO APPOINTS NEW CHIEF FOR DIAVIK DIAMOND MINES

Rio Tinto has appointed Patrick Boitumelo as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Diavik Diamond Mines, according to a report in Gem Konnect. Most recently, Boitumelo was general manager of engineering and projects at Rio Tinto’s Kennecott Utah Copper in Salt Lake City.

In a statement, the miner said that Boitumelo “has extensive operational, stakeholder management and corporate strategy experience at a senior level across a number of businesses in the mining industry, including diamonds, soda ash and salts, nickel, iron ore, copper and copper by-products”.

Meanwhile, Rough & Polished reports that Rio Tinto chairman, Jan du Plessis, has recently informed the board that “he intends to retire as chairman after the completion of an orderly succession process”.

In June 2016, Rio Tinto announced the appointment of Jean-Sebastien Jacques as Chief Executive, and Rio Tinto senior independent director John Varley is leading the process to appoint a new chairman. According to the report, “a successor is expected to be announced before the end of 2017 with Jan du Plessis retiring as chairman by no later than the 2018 annual general meeting in Australia”.
