How to choose the perfect diamond
Every natural diamond is unique. No two diamonds are alike; each diamond has its own characteristics and charm. This is why it is worthwhile to know a few rules that will help you choose the perfect diamond for you.
A reputable company: Countless websites sell diamonds, and it is exactly because of this great variety that it is very important to carefully check who you are buying the diamonds from.
Make sure to choose only a known and reputable diamond company.
The shape of the diamond: For the most part, this is the first thing you should choose.
Round diamonds are the most popular choice, but fancy cuts like oval, princess, and others are also interesting options. The round diamond cut shines the brightest – but sparkle isn’t everything.
No cut is better than others; what matters here is your personal taste and preference.
Weight: The next step is important, and it entails determining the characteristics of the perfect diamond for you (4Cs).
It is best to begin with what is the optimal diamond weight for you and if necessary, change it according to the budget and other aspects.
Keep in mind that it is difficult to distinguish a difference of up to 10% in a diamond’s weight with the naked eye, so there is some leeway. The carat weight is also not the only factor affecting the diamond’s size: an elongated diamond, for example, appears larger than a round diamond of the same weight.
Cut: Next, you have to choose the quality of the cut – the factor that has the biggest effect on a diamond’s beauty.
A good cut produces more sparkle and shine, while an average cut makes the diamond look dark and dull.
When dealing with round diamonds, it is best not to settle for less than a “Very Good” cut grade, while when dealing with fancy diamonds you can compromise on a “Good” grade.
The grading awarded to the quality of the cut in the gemological certificate combines two factors: the proportions of the diamond, and the quality of the finish. Any shortcoming to either will affect how the diamond reflects the light.
Color: When choosing a white diamond, it should look as colorless as possible.
H color diamonds appear colorless to the eye, but it is advisable to aim for diamonds graded as D or E color.
Remember that different cutting styles reflect the color with different intensities.
Clarity: It is important to choose a highly clear diamond, without any noticeable flaws or inclusions.
Diamonds the clarity of which is graded as up to VS2 often appear clear to the eye. If the budget allows, choosing a diamond with a higher clarity grading (FL/IF) is best.
On the other hand, it would be ill-advised to buy diamonds with a clarity grading of “Fair” to “Poor” as they give off little sparkle.
Additional features: In addition to the 4Cs, you should pay attention to the fire, shine, and brilliance of the diamond. You should also look out for symmetry and fluorescence of the diamond: fluorescence usually does not affect the diamond’s appearance in normal light, but it can sometimes cause it to have a greasy or milky appearance.
Gemological certificate: The gemological certificate of the diamond includes a full breakdown of the 4Cs but there are no uniform standards for all laboratories. Therefore, it is highly recommended to choose only diamonds with certificates from a known, leading gemological laboratory in the industry – this will ensure the diamond you have chosen is indeed the right diamond for you.
Good luck!
