In 1999 the eminent actress Lauren Bacall starred in the film “Diamonds”, about a boxer who tries to recover the gems he received in lieu of payment for throwing a fight years earlier. The film was the first time she had shared screen time with Kirk Douglas since “Young Man With A Horn”, released 49 years earlier. But even movies separated by half a century could not bookend Bacall’s illustrious career. She first appeared on the silver screen in 1944’s “To Have And Have Not” and was even featured in the 2014 French animated film Ernest & Celestine, an incredible 70 years later. Though she may best be remembered for the films she co-starred in with her real-life husband Humphrey Bogart, like 1948’s Key Largo, she was still tapped by leading directors in her later years, playing in Robert Altman’s Pret-A-Porter and Lars von Trier’s Dogville.
In some of the most iconic photos that have survived her, Bacall can be seen wearing jewelry. A 1954 black-and-white photo of Bacall shows her wearing a bangle bracelet, as well as a coral necklace and earrings. In another classic color photograph, she sports a layered diamond necklace and an elegant fur stole.
Bacall died of a stroke in August 2014 at her Manhattan home at the age of 89, eliciting an outpouring of grief from fans around the world.
