INDIA: DIAMOND EXPORTS UP 14% IN APRIL

Numbers released by India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council and quoted by Rough & Polished show a 14.04% year-on-year rise in the country’s export of cut and polished diamonds in April. These totaled $2 billion during the month.

 

Imports of rough diamonds for the same month totaled $1.52 billion – a decrease of almost 13% year-on-year. In volume terms, 1.54 million carats of rough were imported in April 2018 – a decline of almost 9% year-on-year.

 

Imports of cut and polished diamonds fell sharply by 38.16% – from $184.95 million in April 2017 to $114.37 million in April 2018.

 

According to an earlier report, from April 2017 to March 2018, India’s polished exports increased by 4.2% year-on-year to $23.7 billion. As for imports of rough diamonds, these rose 5.3% to $1.68 billion in March, “while rough imports for April to March jumped 10.6% to $18.9 billion”.
