The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is piloting a new service to grade both diamonds and other components of jewelry items, IDEX Online reports.
The Jewelry Reports will provide detailed information on metal composition, gemstone characteristics, engravings, and the clarity, color, and carat weight of D-to-Z diamonds that lack a GIA report as an unmounted gem. The service will also include grades for diamonds that are already GIA-certified.
“This new pilot service evaluates the entire piece of jewelry,” said a GIA spokesman. He added that pricing for the pilot service has not yet been determined.
