INDIA: DIAMOND EXPORTS DOWN 6.5% IN AUGUST

Provisional data released by India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), quoted by Rough & Polished, shows that exports of cut and polished diamonds dropped 6.5% year-to-year to $1.82 billion in August 2017.

 

Rough imports in August totaled $975.4 million, down 7.18% year-to-year. In volume terms, 9.1 million carats of rough were imported during the month – up 6.6% year-to-year. Imports of cut and polished diamonds dropped to $143.9 million in August 2017.

 

Between April and August of this year, exports of cut and polished diamonds remained “almost flat” at $ 9.24 billion, compared to $9.2 billion in the same period a year earlier. During the fiscal year to date, rough imports rose 8.84% to $ 7.70 billion. In volume, imports rose by 38.7% to 81.3 million carats.
