London: King Charles III’s Crown to Get “Modification Work”

For the first time in 60 years, the crown which will be used at the coronation of King Charles III has been removed from the Tower of London for “modification work,” IDEX Online reports. The late Queen Elizabeth II wore it last when she was crowned in 1953.

St Edward’s Crown is the historic centerpiece of the Crown Jewels and was made for Charles II in 1661. It is made from solid gold, has a total of 444 precious and semi-precious stones, and weighs 2.23 kilograms.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace announced that the crown had been moved to an “undisclosed location,” ahead of the coronation on May 6. The palace has not given any details on the planned modifications.
