Lesotho: Kao Mine Breaks Own Record with 47.80-Carat Pink

Storm Mountain Diamonds, which operates the Kao mine in Lesotho and is jointly owned by Namakwa Diamonds Limited and the Lesotho Government, announced that it has recovered and sold the biggest pink diamond ever recovered from Kao, according to IDEX Online.

The 47.8-carat gem, dubbed “Pink Eternity”, was sold last month for an undisclosed price.

Kao has yielded a number of impressive diamonds over the years: the 36.06-carat Pink Storm (sold in 2014), the 3.06-carat Purple Princess (2017), the 29.59-carat Rose of Kao (2018), and the the 25.97-carat Pink Dawn (2021). According to a statement by the company, “in a short space of time, the Kao Mine in Lesotho has become a primary producer of exceptional pink diamonds.”

The kimberlite pipe at Kao “is the largest in Lesotho and the fourth largest in Southern Africa,” according to the report.
