Australian miner Merlin Diamonds has recovered a a 35.26 carat brown diamond from the Merlin diamond mine in the Northern Territory in Australia. According to several news sources, this is the fifth largest diamond discovered in Australia.
Alongside the big rough, Merlin also found a 14.6 carat brown diamond and a few smaller white diamonds. Australia’s largest diamond, a 104.73 carat stone, was discovered at Merlin.
Merlin Diamonds Ltd, formerly North Australian Diamonds, acquired the project from the Rio Tinto group in 2004. The Merlin mine began pilot production in 2013. It is located about 100 km south of the settlement of Borroloola and comprises 14 kimberlite pipes, grouped into four cluster. According to the company’s website, it is “famous for producing large, high clarity, super white, and high value diamonds.
