India: 8-year-old Rejects Diamond Millions – and Becomes a Nun

Devanshi Sanghvi, the eight-year-old daughter of a wealthy Indian diamond trader, has made global news this week as she chose to give up on her share of a $61 million inheritance to become a Jain nun, IDEX Online reports.

Sanghvi, heiress to the Sanghvi and Sons jewelry business in Surat, recently took part in the ‘diksha’ ceremony and has vowed to abandon all material possessions. Her father’s business, founded in 1981, is valued by the ICRA credit rating agency at five billion rupees ($61 million).

According to the report, Sanghvi’s family are members of the ancient Jain faith, which “preaches non-violence, strict vegetarianism and love for all animals.” It has approximately five million followers, “primarily in India.”
