Sotheby’s: “Infinite Blue” Diamond Fetches $25.3 Million, Failing Even Low Estimate

Sotheby’s recent sale of the “Infinite Blue,” an 11.28-carat radiant-cut Fancy-Vivid blue diamond, yielded $25.3 million, falling short of its conservative pre-auction estimate of $26 million to $37 million. This rare blue diamond, one of the world’s largest of its kind, achieved the third-highest price ever recorded for a blue diamond sold in Asia.

The rare Type IIb stone, which accounts for less than 0.1% of diamonds with such a striking blue color, was cut from a rough found in Petra Diamonds’ Cullinan mine in South Africa. The diamond is set with a halo of pink and white trapezoid diamonds.

The current record for the highest price achieved for a blue diamond at auction is jointly held by the 15.10-carat fancy-vivid-blue De Beers Blue, which sold for $57.5 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in April 2022, and the 14.6-carat Oppenheimer Blue, which sold for the same price at Christie’s Geneva in May 2016.
