DE BEERS TO EXTEND BOTSWANA’S DIAMOND LIFESPAN FOR 25 YEARS

Debswana, De Beers mining joint venture in Botswana, has said that the tailings project in the Lethlakane mine is 80% complete and will extend the lifespan of the mine by 25 years. According to a report in Mining Weekly, the project will be commissioned late in 2017.

Debswana is also examining the possibility of extending the lifespans of the Damtshaa and Orapa mines beyond their projected exhaustion date of 2050.

The Damtshaa mine, which was placed on ‘care and maintenance’ mode in January this year, will open as soon as diamond prices recover on the international commodity markets, according to the same report.
