A Philippe Dufour watch just became the most expensive timepiece by an independent watchmaker ever sold at auction. According to IDEX Online, the piece sold for $7.3 million on A Collected Man – “a specialist website for ultra-rare wristwatches.”

The Grande et Petite Sonnerie timepiece was made in 1995 for the Sultan of Brunei. It has hourly and quarter-hourly chimes and is one of eight watches ever made.

The record of the most expensive wristwatch ever sold belongs to the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300A-010, which raked in $31 million at an auction in Geneva in 2019.
