The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is taking over Las Vegas based AGS Laboratories (American Gem Society) in “what is being described as a strategic collaboration,” according to IDEX Online. AGS Laboratories will continue to provide services until the end of 2022.
AGS’ research staff, intellectual property, technology and facility in Las Vegas will integrate into GIA. Both grading labs, “regarded as standard-bearers in the diamond industry,” are non-profits established in the 1930s.
AGS CEO Katherine Bodoh said in a statement: “This consequential agreement brings AGS and GIA even closer, driving our future with 90 years of shared history and elevating our founders’ vision.” She called the move an “exciting advancement” and added: “AGS and GIA each have their unique perspective and expertise, and a steadfast focus on advancing ethics, standards and education in the gem and jewelry industry.”
GIA President and CEO Susan Jacques commented: “By harnessing each other’s strengths to move forward boldly, consumers will be better protected and we will ensure the longevity of the Shipleys’ vision.”
