The Gia (Gemological Institute of America) will authenticate items of fine jewelry sold for over $500 on eBay, IDEX Online reports. Currently, eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee only includes sneakers, watches, handbags, and trading cards.

GIA experts and gemologists “will verify metal type, purity, and gemstone quality for new and used items.” After inspection, it will ship the items directly to the customer with a unique authentication card with a QR code.

In a statement eBay said: “By the end of 2022, jewelry authentication will roll out to all eligible listings and identified brands on the platform, making it easier and more trusted than ever to browse and buy fine jewelry on the marketplace.”

It said the verification would soon be expanded to include top designer brands like Bvlgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, David Yurman, Cartier and Tiffany & Co.
