Sri Lankan authorities have recently unveiled what is claimed to be the world’s largest natural corundum blue sapphire. According to Rough & Polished, the 310-kilo stone is on display in a town near Sri Lanka’s capital city Colombo. The sapphire was blessed by a group of Buddhist monks before it was unveiled.

According to the same sources, the stone “was found in a gem pit about three months ago” in the gem-rich Ratnapura area.

Although the stone is yet to be examined by international organizations, local gemologists who examined the sapphire said that “it was one of the rarest gems in the world as it weighed more than 300 kilograms.”
