Despite Q4 Slowdown, Prices of Fancy Color Diamonds Rise in 2023

According to the latest data from the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF), Fancy color diamonds experienced a consistent growth of 2.2% in 2023. While this rate is slower than the 3.9% surge in 2022, it contrasts favorably with the 16.5% value loss seen in colorless diamonds during 2023, IDEX Online reports.

However, Q4 figures indicate a slowdown, with the Index showing a mere 0.1% increase. Yellows remained unchanged, Pinks saw a 0.1% rise, and Blues experienced a 0.2% decline.

Ephraim Zion, FCRF’s data supplier, highlighted a consumer trend of reduced spending on smaller carat weights. However, he added that “this trend is notably compensated by a stronger demand for diamonds with higher saturation such as intense and vivid. As the global economic climate recovers, it’s anticipated that demand for larger carat weights will resurge.”

Throughout 2023, Fancy Yellow diamonds were the primary driver of the overall increase, similar to the trend observed in 2022. Overall, Yellow prices rose by 4%, with the vivid category leading at a 5.3% increase. Pinks showed a 1.8% rise over 2023, while Blues experienced a marginal 0.1% increase.
