H. Samuel Jewelry Store

High Street Jeweler: The Story of H. Samuel

With more than 300 stores across the UK under its name, H. Samuel started out small – as a small clock-making business in Liverpool in 1862. The first H. Samuel retail store opened in Preston in 1890, quickly branching out to other cities, and expanding its business to include the trade and manufacturing of jewelry. By 1970, H. Samuel had 200 stores nationwide. In the early 1990s, the company underwent a restructure, and the group changed name to The Signet Group – today the largest specialty jewelry retailer in the US, UK and Canada.

Signet’s UK division operates approximately 500 stores, primarily under the name brands of H. Samuel and Ernest Jones. H. Samuel has a wide range of diamond, gold and silver jewelry, as well as popular fashion and watch brands.

In 2015, according to the Signet Group’s website, H. Samuel accounted for 7% of Signet’s sales with sales of £240.3 million (approximately $340 million) and average sales per store of £0.8 million (approximately $1 million).
