Marine Diamonds Mining

Marine diamonds mining is a method used for drawing diamonds from the sea with the help of mining vessels. The special ships are in use off the South African and Namibian coast where large amounts of diamonds were swept to the sea in rivers. Many of the diamonds are still to be found on the seabed.

Mining diamonds from the sea bad

Marine diamonds mining is a relatively new method for mining diamonds: Only since the nineteen sixties did the idea arise to draw diamonds from the seabed at sites located opposite estuaries. This type of mining is conducted through the use of huge pumps that are installed upon the mining vessel. The ship is located a few kilometers from the shore and it sucks up sand from in between the rocks on the seabed. Subsequently the water and sand are filtered by special sieves which separate the diamonds from the sand and rock remnants.

Diamonds extracted via marine mining are renowned for their superior quality which is apparently achieved duee to their ability to survive extreme stress, including abrasion and bruising while being swept to sea.

Marine diamonds mining is considered a complex and difficult process, but the high quality of the extracted diamonds attests to the viability of the method.
