Moonstone

Moonstone is a potassium-aluminium silicate used by the jewelry industry as a gemstone. Moonstones are generally of a semi-opaque nature, and though they are predominately white, they have shades of grey, orange and brown.

Some moonstones are lucent with light blue coloring. Blue moonstones are rare and as such more expensive. Common moonstones vary in price, according to the stone’s coloring and clarity.
With a Mohs scale hardness of 6-6.5, the moonstone’s name was derived from the way it reflects light. In ancient times, it was believed that the moonstone’s light reflection coincided with lunar locations.

Moonstones were particularity popular at the height of the Art Nouveau period; and in ancient cultures it was considered a symbol of fertility.
Moonstones, and especially blue moonstones, can be found in Sri Lanka, Australia, the United States, Mexico, Myanmar, Madagascar, Austria, Norway and Poland.
