Automatic Diamond Cutting Machine

An Automatic Diamond Cutting Machine is a machine that cuts diamonds into round shapes. The solution provided by the automatic cutting machine was a significant breakthrough in the cutting of small and medium-sized round stones.

An Israeli Invention

The first Automatic Diamond Cutting Machines were developed in Israel at the beginning of the 1970s by the Israeli Diamond Institute. Very quickly, thanks to their effectiveness and their simplicity, the machines began to be produced in other countries around the world. In Israel, as well, various diamond companies began producing their own versions of the Automatic Diamond Cutting Machine.

How Does It Work?

The original idea was a regularly-shaped cutting machine with a diamond connected to a spinning dop and affixed to the axle. On that axle, but on the opposite side and slightly below it, a second diamond is affixed to a similar machine and also connected to a spinning dop. Bringing the two spinning diamonds together and touching the edges of the stone breaks them down at an identical rate, wearing down the two diamonds, until a circular girdle is formed. This process had to be carried out very carefully and precisely, while constantly observing the stone with a magnifying glass in order to prevent too much cutting. Over time the machines were improved. Today quality assurance takes place with the use of a television monitor, the dops are better than ever before, and there is even a machine that knows how to regulate the amount of cutting according to specific measurements.
