Brignolette Cut – An Ancient Diamond Cut
An old pear-shaped cut that was used on precious stones is named after Brignolette, a city in southeastern France, the meaning of which is “dried plum”.
This unique cut was used in the past to cut large special diamonds, without detracting from their oblong shape. The Brignolette cut is made up of many small triangular cuts, like the old rosettas. The cut does not reflect a large amount of light, but it creates enough angles which allow for light and color effects.
Large polished diamonds with the Brignolette cut, similar to a pear in shape, were mainly embedded in necklace charm or in the crowns of monarchs. Occasionally they were embedded in earrings with special designs. Till this day there are designers who favor diamonds with the Brignolette cut. The problem of how to fasten the stone is easily solved today by using a laser to burn a hole through the stone, allowing it to be attached to a chain.
