A man driving through the Shenzhen Bay checkpoint in Hong Kong on July 3 was arrested after customs authorities found 44 undeclared gold bars weighing a total of 44 kilograms.
The gold bars, worth HK$11.9 million (US$1.5 million) were put in a hidden compartment in the car’s armrest, according to scmp.com. According to the report, the offense is punishable by five years in prison.
In recent months, there were several attempts at smuggling big amounts of gold across the Hong Kong-mainland border: in December, a driver at the Lok Ma Chau checkpoint was arrested for trying to smuggle 11 kilos of gold bars. That same month, a 31-year-old driver at Shenzhen Bay was detained while trying to smuggle 35 kilos of gold bars.
