IDEX Price Report: Round Diamonds Keep Falling in September 2023

The IDEX Price Report for September 2023, published by IDEX Online, shows that Round diamond prices dropped while Fancy diamonds “fared somewhat better.”

The overall market is still “weak,” according to IDEX Online, with a prevailing sense of cautious sentiment. Notably, Alrosa’s decision to suspend sales for two months is seen as an effort to bring stability to the market. Lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) are on track to surpass natural diamonds in sales, currently accounting for nearly half of all unit sales. In addition, business was “slow” at the Jewellery & Gem World fair in Hong Kong “as buyers expect prices to drop further,” according to the report.

Among Round diamonds, there were “significant losses” in all goods from 0.70-cts to 2.99-cts, “with barely any increases.” Fortunately, a “very different picture” emerged among Fancy gems, “with fewer losses and less movement overall, but no clear direction of travel.”
