It’s been a good month: Russian mining giant Alrosa has announced diamond sale results for May and the first five months of 2017.
During May, Alrosa sold rough and polished diamonds worth $472.1 million – 33% higher compared to a year earlier. Revenue from rough diamond sales totaled $467.6 million, while sales of polished diamond brought the company $4.5 million.
In January-May 2017, Alrosa’s rough and polished diamond sales exceeded $2.13 billion − 5% lower year-on-year. Rough diamonds were sold for $2.09 billion, while polished diamonds brought $44.3 million. Commenting on the drop in sales during January-May, Alrosa’s VP Yury Okoemov said that “early in 2016 the Company sold a substantial part of high-priced rough diamonds from previously accumulated stocks. This year, the share of small-size, inexpensive rough diamonds in total sales is higher, which, above all, is related to the composition of stock as at the start of the year”.
