A BLOODY SUMMER: JEWELRY ROBBERIES ACROSS THE US

A recent update from the Jewelers’ Security Alliance tells the story of several jewelry-related robberies and arrests across the US in July.

On July 15, two suspects entered a retail jewelry store in Macon, Georgia, and managed to run off with a watch after trying one on. No violence was used, and the two men are still at large.

 

On July 14, two suspects were sentenced to life in prison in California for shooting and killing a traveling salesperson from Hong Kong in February 2013. The men followed the salesperson from the jewelry district in downtown Los Angeles, then shot him after he left a restaurant in West Covina.

 

In Dallas, Texas, five South American gang members were arrested in July for a series of robberies of traveling jewelry salespersons in the Dallas area between April and June of 2016. In one of the incidents, one of the victims fell of his car and died. John Parker, U.S Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, is quoted as saying that the five suspects an “extremely dangerous group of robbers” that are “part of a larger, organized South American theft group […]”.
