Four employees of the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) are accused of replacing high quality diamonds from the company’s sorting house with fake diamonds, thereby defrauding the company to the tune of half a million dollars.
According to several sources, ZCDC diamond sorter Anesu Dhliwayo (34) has appeared before Harare magistrate over the weekend, facing theft charges. He is suspected of conspiring with a security guard, a diamond sorter and a closed circuit television operator to manipulate CCTV cameras to replace natural diamonds with fake diamonds. The three other suspects have already appeared before the court.
According to the prosecutor, “This case involves theft of about $500 000 diamonds from his employer who earns revenue for the Government. The accused bought a Toyota Wish with the proceeds from the crime. He led police to the recovery of the vehicle”.
