An $300K Doll and an Iconic Necklace: The Barbie Craze in Barbie Jewels

In a remarkable triumph, the Barbie movie has recently achieved a staggering milestone, surpassing the $1 billion mark in just over two weeks since its premiere on July 20. Director Greta Gerwig has also made her mark by breaking a record previously held by Patty Jenkins, the director of Wonder Woman. While film critics across the globe engage in ongoing discussions about the various messages within the movie, fans are equally engrossed in examining the style and accessories featured in this brand-rich film – from clothing to jewelry.

Within the realm of “Barbie,” an array of accessories graces the screen, yet a vibrant Chanel necklace emerges as a distinct highlight. Instore Magazine calls this piece a “spectacular statement” that boasts a striking arrangement of sizable, multicolored stones enveloped by halos of white diamonds.

Beneath this arrangement are sideways pear-shaped pearls alternating with gold Chanel logos, while additional pear-shaped pearls sway from both the stones and the logos. The pièce de résistance takes the form of a large heart-shaped pendant suspended from the central logo. According to the report, the piece is from the brand’s “legendary spring/summer 1995 runway show.”

At the Barbie Premiere in Los Angeles, actor Ryan Gosling (who stars as Ken in the movie), wore a pink suit and a chain with a letter “E” pendant “in Barbie’s iconic pink-edged white script.” According to another article by Instore Magazine, this “E” is a reference to the actor’s longtime partner, Eva Mendes. On Instagram, the actor’s stylist, Mark Avery, said that he had the pink-edged letter custom “made by Hollywood 3D printing so that he could get the Barbie font and color exactly right.”

At the same premiere, the film’s star Margot Robbie complemented her black sequined Schiaparelli haute couture gown and Manolo Blahnik heels with 380 carats of diamonds set in Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. The set up included necklaces of 350 carats, a pair of 19-carat studs and a 10-carat diamond ring. According to a piece in People’s magazine, Robbie’s diamonds totaled an estimated $1 million.

Ahead of the film, a UK-based jewelry brand, Lorel Diamonds, created the “world’s most expensive ring made for a doll,” according to Professional Jeweller. Lorel Diamonds’ Doll & Me Dream Ring Set, priced at £19,599 (around $24,878), is the world’s first and most expensive ring made for a tiny doll hand, and it comes with a matching human-size version. The matching life-size ring comes in at £18,500 (around $23,483) and features a rare 5-carat pink sapphire with 0.75-carat diamonds on either side, set in a platinum band with a secret doll-inspired engraving.

Another record-shattering Barbie burst on the scene in October 2010, when a Barbie-clad doll in a strapless black evening dress and a 1-carat pink diamond sold for  $302,500 at Christie’s New York. According to IDEX Online, the center diamond of Barbie’s necklace was graded by GIA as a “1.00-ct a cut-cornered modified square-cut fancy vivid purplish pink, natural color, I1 clarity. It was surrounded by three carats of white diamonds.”
