INDIA: POLISHED DIAMOND EXPORTS JUMP IN JUNE

Provisional data released by India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) show that the country’s polished diamond exports rose by 5.07% year-on-year to $2.08 billion in June 2018.

 

Overall exports from the gem and jewelry sector grew by 0.9% in the same period, totaling $3,294.51 million. Total gem and jewelry imports totaled $2,6195.58 million in June – down 3.99% year-on-year. Rough imports were down by 14.2% in value terms to $1.53 billion, totaling 15.5 million carats. Imports of cut and polished diamonds were down 38.37% to $141.1 million. Colored gemstone exports dropped to $40.80 million, compared to $51.86 million exported during June 2017.

 

Polished diamond exports were up 8.9% to $6.29 billion during April-June 2018. Imports of polished diamonds fell by 47.1% to $348.55 million. For the first three months of the fiscal year 2018-19, overall gem and jewelry exports fell 8.84% to $10.17 billion.

 

During the fiscal year to date, import of rough diamonds fell 14.76% to $4.6 billion. In volume terms, imports fell by 9.08% to 47.78 million carats.
