Russian mining giant Alrosa has announced the recovery of an irregular-shaped diamond weighing 390.7 carats – Alrosa’s largest recovery in a decade,” according to IDEX Online. The gem is described “as a light crystal of irregular shape, bordered by a yellow-brown halo.”
The stone was recovered by Alrosa’s subsidiary Almazy Anabara at the Mayat mine in Yakutia alongside a 37.7-carat regular-shaped colorless diamond. The 390.7-carat gem is the largest gem-quality diamond found by Alrosa since it unearthed a 401-carat diamond in 2013.
Alrosa’s CEO Pavel Marinychev said on the company’s Telegram channel: “The discovery of one of the largest diamonds in Russian history is undoubtedly an unprecedented event and an excellent finale to the 2023 mining season.” The new found stone, he said, is “without a doubt, a record holder both for our company and for the country’s diamond industry”.
