Pink Star diamond

THE $60 MILLION “PINK STAR” GOES ON AUCTION – AGAIN

The largest pink diamond in the world, a 59.60 carat, mixed cut diamond known as “Pink Star”, will go on Auction in Sotheby’s Hong Kong on April 4. According to Gem Konnect, the “Pink Star” is estimated at $60 million. According to Sotheby’s, the diamond, which was mined by De Beers in 1993 as a 132.5-carat rough, is the most valuable polished diamond ever offered at auction.

Three years ago, in November 2013, the diamond was sold at a Sotheby’s Geneva auction for a record-breaking sum of $83 million. However, the buyer, New York-based diamond cutter Isaac Wolf, later defaulted and the purchase was cancelled.

According to Sotheby’s, the “Pink Star” “is the largest Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Pink diamond ever graded by the Geological Institute of America (GIA). “The extraordinary size of this 59.60-carat diamond, paired with its richness of colour, surpasses any known pink diamond record in history,” said David Bennett, worldwide Chairman of Sotheby’s Jewellery Division. The current record for a pink diamond is held by the “Graff Pink”, a 24.78 carat stone sold for $46.2 million in 2010, Bennett said.
