ART DECO DIAMOND JEWELRY SHATTER PRE-SALE EXPECTATIONS

The latest auction of Bonhams at London, held April 25, saw three pieces of Art Deco diamond and emerald jewelry go for a total of £1,928,250 ($2,657,126) after a “bidding frenzy”, according to the auction house.

The pieces are attributed to Hennell, “one of Britain’s oldest and most venerable jewellers”, were made in the 1930s, and all exceeded their pre-sale estimates. The first piece, a 12.13-carat emerald and diamond pendant necklace, was sold for £1,328,750 ($1,831,016). The second piece, an Art Deco emerald and diamond dress ring, sold for £368,750 ($508,137) while the third and final piece from the collection – a diamond clip brooch – sold for £230,750 ($317,973).

An Art Deco emerald and diamond necklace/bracelet combination also did very well, selling for a total of £1,052,750 ($1,450,688) – more than four times its pre-sale estimate.

All in all, the sale achieved a total of £7,825,250 ($10,783,186) and sold 91% of lots by value.
