16.90 carats Diamond ring

BONHAMS SELLS 16.9-CARAT CARAT DIAMOND RING FOR $1.8 MILLION

A 16.9-carat step-cut diamond sold for $1,800,000 at Bonhams New York last Tuesday (September 19). The diamond is certified as D color, Internally Flawless and classified as Type IIa.

Another highlight of the sale was a diamond, emerald and ruby brooch from circa 1900, which was purchased at a garage sale in Ohio five years ago for just $8, according to Bonhams. It was given to the owner by her mother to wear to church one day, and she placed it in the bottom of her handbag and forgot about it. Many months later, when visiting a jeweler, she was told the diamonds in the brooch was real. She then approached the Fine Jewelry team at Bonhams, and they discovered that the emeralds and rubies were also of gem quality. The brooch finally sold for $26,000.

Susan Abeles, Head of Jewelry, Bonhams US, commented: “Discoveries like these don’t happen very often so we were delighted to offer this at auction where the actual value of the piece was finally realized”.
