LEIBISH&CO. – HOW IT ALL BEGAN

“Our story begins in 1979, on a train barreling towards London. A young man named Leibish Polnauer – a diamond polisher by trade – was traveling the rails and reading ‘The Guardian.’ The factory at which he worked had been shut down. And so, Leibish sat on the train, awaiting his station and scanning the day’s headlines.

That was when the sales advert on the front page caught his eye. Royal crown jeweler Garrard was promoting a 6 carat pear shaped brown diamond. A firm believer in man shaping his own destiny, Leibish decided to make a phone call. “For some reason they connected me to the general manager of the company,” he says with a smile, “and I tried to sell to him.”

With no existing stock of his own, Leibish offered his services as a diamond dealer and was invited in for a meeting. “So the guy says to me, ‘one of the leading families in the area is marrying off their daughter, and her father wants to make a tiara of pear shaped diamonds. Do you have any? I need them within 2 weeks.”

The Search: London – New York – Tel Aviv

Replying in the affirmative, Leibish hopped a plane to New York City, then Tel Aviv. 60,000 British pounds later, he returned to Garrard with a selection of stones. “I presented them and he bought everything.” Leibish remembers. “That was the beginning of my love for fancy shapes and fancy diamonds.”
