A 1.3-METER, 360 KG EMERALD FOUND IN BRAZIL

A huge emerald – measuring 1.3 metres and weighing 360 kgs – was unearthed 200 meters below the surface of the Carnaiba mine in the Pindobacu district in Brazil. Diamond World reports that the huge emerald was discovered in April, and was sold for an undisclosed sum “to an individual who refused to give an interview for security purposes”.

Marcio Jandir, the owner’s lawyer, said that “all the relevant documentation for the sale had been completed”, adding that the owner is “authorised to travel with the stone throughout Brazilian territory as he intended to present it at museums and libraries”.

This is not the first huge emerald found in the region. In 2001,a 20 kilograms emerald, valued at $310 million, was unearthed and transported to the US illegally. According to the report, the stone became “the subject of a legal dispute between Brazil and the United States until it was decided in 2015 it would remain in the United States”.
