A 50.03-carat diamond sold by Sotheby’s New York recently raked in $2.7 million – the highest price ever for a diamond auctioned online, IDEX Online reports.

The 50.03-ct G-color, VVS2-clarity round gem “with excellent cut, polish and symmetry” was estimated at $2.5 million – $5 million, and was only the fifth round +50-carat diamond to be offered in the past 15 years. 11 individual bidders for seven countries fought for it.

Quig Bruning, head of Sotheby’s jewelry department in New York, said that the sale “sends a powerful and positive message that online sales represent a key part of our worldwide strategy and the white diamond market is robust”.
