ALROSA HALTS RESCUE OPERATIONS AT MIR DUE TO RISKY CONDITIONS

Alrosa reported yesterday (August 15) that rescue operations were halted in a flooded area at Mir mine, where four of the still eight missing miners are thought to be located.

Yesterday, according to a company report quoted by Gem Konnect, the water level in the area where the four miners are thought to be was more than one-meter deep, “making it too risky for rescuers to get there”. Alrosa said it is too early to know whether the missing miners are dead since their location was “only approximate”.

The water flooded into the mine shaft from an open-cast mine above it on Friday, August 5. 151 miners were inside, and 143 miners were extracted safely. Since then, rescue operations have been ongoing for the missing eight miners.

Earlier this week, Alrosa said that the horrific accident at will not affect the diamond miner’s diamond production plans for the remainder of the year. Alrosa plans to produce 39 million carats of rough diamonds in 2017.
