Recent figures released by Statistics Botswana and quoted by IDEX Online shows that Botswana’s real GDP rose 8.4% year-on-year in Q3 of 2021, boosted by a “recovering demand for diamonds.”
According to the report, “diamond traders recorded a massive growth of 44.8% as opposed to an increase of 6.2% recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.” Diamond production in carats went up by 32.2% during Q3 2021.
Meanwhile, Mining Weekly reports that, following a preliminary kimberlite assessment by Botswana Diamonds on its Thorny River diamond prospect in South Africa, “projected kimberlite volume is now “considerably higher than previous estimates at about two-million tonnes.”
