One of the more daring gold heists in history occurred over the weekend in Brazil, when armed robbers managed to steal 750 kg of gold and other metals from the Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport. The loot is reportedly worth between $30 to $40 million.
According to news reports, eight robbers entered the cargo terminal at the airport driving two trucks resembling those driven by Brazilian federal police. Four men then exited one of the trucks, all wearing face covers. They then took two hostages, both of them airport workers. The robbers then managed to load the trucks with the loot and exit the airport without firing any shots. Both hostages were released unharmed.
News reports say that the precious cargo was in a shipment destined to Zurich and New York, and that the nature of the heist suggests that the robbers may have had access to internal information about airport operations
