De Beers is planning to further reduce the number of its sightholders, according to a report by IDEX Online.
The diamond company revealed last month that, starting in January 2026, it plans to decrease the number of companies directly purchasing rough diamonds from it, according to the report.
The number of De Beers sightholders peaked at 350 companies in the 1970s. In 2001, the number of sightholders was halved, and it has since decreased further in line with changes the company has made to its client structure.
Today, De Beers has 53 international sightholders, in addition to 40 sightholders in Botswana and 14 in Namibia. However, many companies hold sightholder status in several locations, so De Beers currently has a total of around 60 sightholders.
