GEM DIAMONDS RECOVERS 98.42-CARAT DIAMOND FROM LETSENG

Another big find for Gem Diamonds: The miner reported that it has uncovered a 98.42-carat, high-quality D-colour Type II diamond at its Letšeng mine in Lesotho. According to CEO Clifford Elphick, quoted by Mining Weekly, there had been “notable improvement in the size and quality of diamonds” in Letšeng during April and May.

The 98.42-carat diamond found this week, as well as a 80.58-carat diamond recovered earlier this month, will be sold in June. On April 7, the miner found a 114-carat diamond at Letšeng, which the miner called “the highest dollar per carat kimberlite diamond mine in the world”.

Elphick commented: “The market for Letšeng’s high-quality diamonds has remained firm over the period and this is anticipated to continue into the second half of this year. In addition, the revised life-of-mine plan was implemented during February with the objective of reducing waste tonnes mined and improving near term cash flows, and we expect to see the benefits emerge during the year ahead”.
