GEM DIAMONDS RECOVERS MASSIVE 152-CARAT STONE AT LETSENG

Gem Diamonds has announced the recovery of a 152 carat, top white colour Type IIa diamond from its Letšeng mine in Lesotho. According to the miner, this is the sixth diamond of over 100 carats recovered in 2018.

In mid-January, Gem Diamonds recovered the fifth largest gem quality diamond ever recovered: a 910 carat, D colour Type IIa diamond of “exceptional quality”, from Letšeng. Clifford Elphick, Gem Diamonds’ CEO, commented on the extraordinary find: “Since Gem Diamonds acquired Letšeng in 2006, the mine has produced some of the world’s most remarkable diamonds, including the 603 carat Lesotho Promise […]”.

In February, Gem Diamonds announced that it achieved an average price of $2,217 per carat for Q4 2017 (ending 31 December) – a 19% increase over the previous quarter. The rise is attributed to “strong rise in sales and the recovery of many diamonds greater than 100 carats at its Letšeng mine in Lesotho”.
