GJEPC DECLARES WAR ON UNDISCLOSED SYNTHETIC DIAMONDS

The battle against undisclosed mixing of lab-grown diamonds with natural diamonds, a growing problem in India, gets a new powerful ally: Praveenshankar Pandya, Chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has announced the establishment of an International Diamond Monitoring Committee to “eliminate the problem of undisclosed mixing of lab-grown diamonds” in the country.

According to IDEX Online, Pandya made the comments last Friday (July 28), on the second day of the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS), following a meeting of representatives from industry bodies.

Pandya said that GJEPC will offer its members “to pay half the cost of machines that can detect whether a diamond is lab-grown”. He said that while he isn’t against the trade in synthetic diamonds, “there needed to be a clear distinction between lab-grown and natural, mined diamonds in order to ensure that consumer confidence worldwide was not damaged”.
