“The Enigma” – a huge, rare 555.5-carat, 55-facet carbonado diamond, has recently been exhibited for the first time ever and will soon be auctioned, IDEX Online reports.
The diamond, which got a public viewing at the Dubai Diamond Exchange on January 18, will go “on tour” in Dubai, Los Angeles and London before being offered on a single-lot online auction with no reserve by Sotheby’s on February 3 to 9.
“The Engima”, which the largest fancy black natural color diamond in the world, is “thought to have been created from a meteoric impact or a diamond-bearing asteroid that collided with Earth.” Carbonado diamonds are 2.6 to 3.8 billion years old and very rare.
“The Engima” was cut with 55 facets, “even though diamonds with a black coloration are near-impossible to cut and polish,” according to the report.
